Cancer
Cancer occurs when cells in the body are altered by exposure to a carcinogen (a cancer causing substance) and begin to grow and reproduce in an irregular fashion. This abnormal cell growth is dangerous because it crowds out healthy cells, stealing needed oxygen and nutrients. This malignant growth will also attack and destroy surrounding tissue and can metastasize, meaning malignant cells break off and travel through the bloodstream or lymph system to other parts of the body and start new tumors.
