Malignant Mesothelioma
Malignant mesothelioma is a rare and deadly cancer characterized by tumor growth in the pleural membrane that lines the outside of the lungs and stomach. This form of cancer arises almost exclusively from asbestos exposure and is nearly always fatal.
What are the Symptoms?
Mesothelioma develops slowly following the initial asbestos exposure, sometimes taking as long as 40 years to manifest. Early stage symptoms can resemble pneumonia. In many cases, though, there are no symptoms, and the cancer is discovered only after a routine chest x-ray is performed.
Types of Mesothelioma
The three common types of mesothelioma are:
- Pleural Mesothelioma
- Peritoneal Mesothelioma
- Pericardial Mesothelioma
Treatment Options
Treatment for mesothelioma can encompass a number of therapies intended to kill cancerous cells, prevent the tumor from spreading or alleviate the symptoms associated with mesothelioma. Some possible treatments include:
- Thoracotomy
- Pneumonectomy
- Extrapleural Pneumonectomy
- Paracentesis
- Pericardiocentesis
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation
