Heart Valve Disorder
Heart Valve Disorders include a number of conditions that affect the four valves that regulate the flow of blood through the heart. These one-way valves open to allow blood to flow through and close to ensure that blood does not back flow. A malfunctioning valve that cannot close properly will allow some blood to flow in a reverse direction, forcing the heart to work harder. This condition, called regurgitation, can cause chest and arm pain, pressure beneath the breastbone, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, and possible blackouts. In severe cases, it can result in death.
Causes of Heart Valve Disorders
Heart valve disorders can be caused by various conditions such as:
- Drug or medication side effects
- Medical malpractice (misdiagnosis, failure to diagnose, etc.)
- Birth defects
- Infections
- Age
Flashback: In July 1997, the Mayo Clinic determined that the popular diet drug combination, Fen-Phen was responsible for more than 24 cases of heart valve disease in patients who had taken the drug. Those numbers soon rose. Following this, there was a drug recall and the FDA warned consumers not to take it.
